Forming an Opportunity
1/2.)I have the belief that pollution is hurting our limited environment. Each household adds to the landfills across our country and eventually, we won't have anywhere to put all of our garbage. I believe a way to reduce waste would be to require each household by a certain date to purchase an "Eco-Shredder". A machine where you would dispose of all of your papers and plastics to be shredded. Each week, along with your garbage the shredded material would be picked up and be used for recycling. As a reward for using this shredder, households would receive tax breaks depending on how much material they contributed. This would greatly help reduce the amount of waste we contribute to our landfills while saving Americans money and thus helping the environment.
3.) The prototypical customer would be every American that lives in a house/apartment and uses plastic materials.
Interview #1
I interviewed my mom, Dawn Thomas about this opportunity. Although this opportunity doesn't meet American's immediate needs it addresses our long-term needs of the future. She thinks its a good idea and stated that she would definitely participate in such a program.
Interview # 2
I interviewed my friend, Riley Bassett who lives in a local house in Gainesville. He is a Biomedical Engineering major with a heavy workload. Despite his workload, he says he would participate in the program to help the environment as well as receiving a tax cut.
Interview # 3
I interviewed my fraternity house mother, Molly Mcain. She says that she would require our house chefs to participate in shredding our recyclables so that the house would receive the tax break.
Summary:
We need to take steps towards making our world a better place for the next generations to come. Although the typical American is self-centered I think this idea could take off if government officials were on board with it. Some issues with the idea would be mass producing these "Eco-Shredders" so that every household could receive one. It could also be problematic if people choose to not participate in the program by throwing out their plastics in their regular garbages. Overall I think my idea helps combat the issue of pollution and can help a lot of people in the long term.

Hey Kerry,
ReplyDeleteThis actually sounds like a really good idea for a company. There are a lot of opportunities for eco-friendly solutions to a lot of the problems that we face as a society today. Also, having a mind for the environment is something that a lot of companies are trying to develop in today's market. I could really seeing a big utilities company getting behind something like this in order to make moves towards widespread sustainability.
Hey Kerry!
ReplyDeleteI like your idea of Eco-Shredders a lot as they could be very beneficial to protecting out environment. I think that you'd be surprised by all the people who would be on board for protecting the environment but having a government official backing it wouldn't hurt. This would be especially useful if it could eliminate plastic bags that end up accumulating in many peoples homes.
