idea napkin

1.) My name is Kerry Thomas from Long Island New York. I am currently a finance major here at UF. My skills include athletics, socializing, problem-solving and mathematics. Captaining sports teams, a finance internship, and years of education are a few things that show my experience. My aspirations are to make the world a better place regardless of how much effort it requires. My invention proposal is the "Eco-Shredder", which can eliminate plastic waste by over 50% and make it more efficient to recycle.

2.) My idea offers a lot to the world and even offers benefits to the American individual. The "Eco-Shredder" is essentially a paper shredder with plastic shredding capabilities. This would be a government-sponsored program where households would be voluntarily given these machines at an affordable price. Households would then be given tax breaks in increasing increments depending on how many pounds of plastic each household returned. The returned plastic is then hypothetically melted down and then recycled.

3.) This product ideally would be offered to every homeowner spanning the entire world, but initially, this project will have to be small scale to see how effective it is for eliminating plastic waste.

4.) My customers will care for 2 reasons:
          1. they will be making the world a safer and cleaner place for generations to come
          2. they will save money via tax breaks.

5.) My idea is unique because whereas most products are based on individualistic needs my product helps society as a whole.

Ultimately, the "Eco-Shredder" is a sound idea that can help benefit the environment. I recently read an article about an "island of trash" in the Caribean Sea that spanned for over a mile long. The Caribean islands flourish because tourists come to see the beautiful sceneries. Soon enough, pastic waste will cover everything and the world will lose much of the beauty that we all love. I strongly believe that something has to be done to change this. I know that my "Eco-Shredder" concept won't solve the issue completely but it will point society in the right direction.

    Hey Kerry! You did such a great job explaining your product and how it could benefit the world. I really think your product will have so much potential and will become extremely popular. There are some people in the world who truly care about the environment who will purchase this good, and there are some people who will not care. But you were able to bring something to grab their attention. You did such a great job thinking outside the box on how you could target other consumers. Overall, great job!

Exit Strategy

I intend to keep my business under my name for the long run. The "Eco-Shredder" is something that I have put a lot of thought and effort into. I respect people who sell their businesses to larger companies for profit, but that is never a route I would be willing to take. When you sell the rights to your idea you are forced to watch it go down routes that you would never intend it to. Even if there is less profit to be made from taking this route I believe its worth it to keep your business model on track and in line with your values. I think my exit strategy has influenced my business decisions to be more long-term because I know that I will be sticking with my ideas for the duration of my business and not selling it off. My strategy has made me more patient with my business growth and allowing the right opportunities to come to me. I won't be afraid to pass up on a deal so that I can wait for a better one to come.
